A whopping MMORPG (multiplayer online role playing game) Runescape is the brainchild of Jagex Limited a British developer. With over nine million active players and more than eight hundred thousand members the game is currently ranked as one of the top online games worldwide.
The game was launched in two thousand and one as a beta version. This version is still operational today and is dubbed Runescape classic. In January of two thousand and six, play was limited to subscribed members only that had logged in one or more times between August two thousand and five to January two thousand and six. Any accounts that did not log in between this period no longer had access to the classic version.
As technology improved, changes were made to the game by Jagex. Though it started out solely as a graphical update, the game engine ended up being totally rewritten. The version that came up as a result of this was full of three dimensional graphics along with other improvements. This updated version was dubbed Runescape 2. Later own the two was dropped from the name though the 2 was still used to distinguish between it and the Runescape classic version. It was fully launched in two thousand and four.
In August of the following year, Runescape classic was no longer able to be accessed by non paying members. The company made that decision based on the fact that some of the free players were not using the game correctly. So in a bid to clean it up they restricted it to the paying members only that was less likely to cause any problems.
Persons that wished to play for free had access to the main Runescape game. This version was equipped with much better protection and monitoring systems. It was subject to regular updates and had more persons working behind the scenes as, well.
As Runescape classic can only be accessed by the paying members, it is something of a novelty in the gaming world. Persons treat it with a certain level of respect as it is a throwback to the grand old days of beta gaming. Things were so much simpler then and not as realistic and complicated as the newer version of the game. It is a excellent opportunity to get down and have fun with the basics then one can always get back to the excitement of the newer version.
